University Overview
The University of Stirling is a public university in central Scotland, established by Royal Charter in 1967 as the first new university in Scotland for nearly 400 years. It has around 12,000 students and a strong international profile, with more than 140 nationalities represented on campus.
The university occupies a 330-acre parkland campus at Airthrey, on the edge of Stirling, with its own loch and woodland. Teaching buildings, student residences, sports facilities, a theatre and a cinema are all within walking distance, and the campus is regularly rated among the best in the world for its environment.
Stirling is organised into faculties of social sciences, arts and humanities, natural sciences, and health sciences and sport, alongside Stirling Management School. It is designated Scotland's University for Sporting Excellence and hosts national sports facilities. Research focuses on health and wellbeing, culture and society, environment, enterprise and the economy, and sport, and the university received a Queen's Anniversary Prize in 2014 for research into the effects of tobacco, alcohol and food marketing on young people.
Information for International Students
International students make up more than 30 percent of the University of Stirling student body, representing over 140 nationalities. The Student Immigration and Visa Services team advises on Student visa applications, CAS, document and funds checks, and the Graduate Route, and advisers are available by appointment. A central Student Services Hub provides wider support once students arrive.
The typical English language requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall, with no sub-skill below 5.5, for undergraduate study, and IELTS 6.5 overall, with no sub-skill below 6.0, for postgraduate study. Pre-sessional English courses are available on campus and online.
Pathway programmes are delivered on the Stirling campus by INTO University of Stirling at the International Study Centre. These include an International Foundation leading to the second year of a Scottish undergraduate degree, an International Year Two leading to the third year, and Pre-Masters programmes, alongside academic English courses. Some combined programmes allow the pathway and degree to be covered by a single visa.
The university has more than 2,800 rooms, and new undergraduates are given priority in the allocation of university accommodation.

A UK student guardian must be a responsible adult, usually aged 25 or over, who lives permanently in the UK, speaks fluent English and is close enough to respond quickly in an emergency. The guardian must be contactable 24 hours a day, act as the university's emergency contact until the student turns 18, and hold an Enhanced DBS check where they or their household host the student. University of Stirling may also ask for the guardian's details at enrolment and set additional requirements of its own.
