University Overview
The Courtauld Institute of Art is a specialist institution for the study of art history, curating and conservation, and a self-governing college of the University of London. It was founded in 1932 by the industrialist and collector Samuel Courtauld, together with Lord Lee of Fareham and Sir Robert Witt, and its degrees are awarded by the University of London.
The Courtauld is based at Somerset House on the Strand in central London, where the Institute sits alongside the Courtauld Gallery. The Gallery holds one of the most important art collections in the UK, particularly noted for French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, which gives students direct access to major works as part of their study. The institution is small, with around 600 students, which allows for close teaching and small-group seminars. Programmes range from the BA in History of Art through master's degrees in art history, curating and art business to PhD research, alongside internationally recognised postgraduate training in the conservation of easel and wall paintings. A major redevelopment of its Somerset House campus is planned for completion around 2029.

The Courtauld has a long tradition of welcoming students from around the world, and its International Office provides guidance on the Student visa, the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) process and the Graduate Route for eligible graduates. CAS issuance typically begins from May for the relevant autumn intake, once an applicant holds an unconditional offer. The English language requirement is the same across undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes, typically IELTS 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in reading and writing, reflecting the reading and writing demands of art historical study. The Courtauld does not run its own pre-sessional English course, although it refers applicants to the pre-sessional provision at King's College London. There is no foundation or pathway route into the Institute.
Accommodation is not guaranteed. Students may apply for rooms at Duchy House, a Courtauld hall, at University of London intercollegiate halls or at King's College London residences, subject to availability, and are otherwise directed to the University of London Housing Service.
